Cultivated by the ancient Egyptians, Anise is an attractive, finely-textured herb grown for its licorice-scented leaves and delicately flavored seeds. The sweet tasting leaves and the aromatic seeds are used in many salads and dishes. These plants will grow 24-30 tall. Plant in shallow saucers for winter microgreens and harvest by snipping off tender young shoots with scissors. The young shoots have a more subtle flavor than the mature leaves.
Anise can deter pests from Brassica (mustard family)by disguising their odor. This is also a good herb to plant with coriander which improves the anise seed production and tends to improve the vigor of any plant growing next to it. Anise can also be used in ointments as an insect repellent.
