First of all, mix clean, dry sand with the seed. Sand adds volume and helps in even distribution. Use 4 or 5 parts sand to 1 part seed. For small areas, broadcast seeds by hand. On larger areas, use a cyclone type fertilizer spreader. Rake lightly, covering seeds to a depth of 1/8 inch.
For areas larger than one acre, pull a section of chain-link fence behind an ATV or small tractor. This will cover the seed and save precious time.
A WORD ABOUT LARGE AREAS
Understand that moisture MUST be present for germination. Either seed in early Spring and hope for adequete rain, wait until Fall, just before Winter, or arrange to sprinkle with an irrigation system, planting just before the hard frost in Spring.
Use 1 oz. of wildflower seed for every 100 square feet. Our experience tells that you can still get a good stand of wildflowers even at the rate of 1 lb. for 4000 sq. ft. on sites of 1 acre or larger (this translates to as little as 10 lbs. per acre).
To mix grass seed with wildflowers, use only blue gramma, sheep fescue, or hard fescue in equal parts with flower seed. These are non-competitive and serve to control erosion. For the southeastern US, use Tall Fescue.
